Development of carbon composite frame for electric mountain bikes
LYNX eMTB is the name of the Lynx Advanced Composites’ project that, in partnership with INEGI, concerns the development a carbon composite frame for electric mountain bikes (e-MTB). The low weight construction and the high mechanical resistance are the main advantages of the construction with this material.
As Maria Fonseca, Lynx Advanced Composites Innovation and Development engineer, explains, the project was born "from the desire to develop a more attractive e-MTB frame, from a design perspective, with superior quality and a fair price”.
Differentiating factors in a market where production processes are another major concern. "We want to use state-of-the-art technology to reduce the amount of hand labour required, increase the rate of production and thus be economically competitive compared with the frames of the competition."
In recent months, INEGI has been working in partnership with this startup in order to convey all the particularities and restrictions that characterize the manufacturing processes of the composite materials. This has enabled the startup to adapt the design of the frame to the process of manufacture of composite materials, thus allowing the reliability and feasibility of the project.
"We are also designing and developing all the necessary tools for the industrial implementation of frame fabrication, and we expect that in the coming months we will start prototyping at our facilities using mainly HP-RTM (Resin Transfer Molding)”, explains Rui Mendes, responsible for the project at INEGI.
Ensuring compliance with the legal requirements on quality and safety, in particular the European standards that dictate safety requirements for bicycles, is also an indispensable condition that has been on the agenda.
"The collaboration with INEGI allows us to have access to accumulated know-how and, in this way, to be able to develop the prototype in a faster and efficient way," says Maria Fonseca.
